Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost is a wonderful addition to the Night Huntress world. The franchise branches out with two new main characters, one of which is our traditional vampire, Vlad. It’s a well known angle, but it’s done in such a devilish way that it’s hard not to love him. While he is a total ass in most of the book, it’s executed so well and he’s portrayed with such a hotness that you just don’t care.
The plot centers around Laila helping Vlad find out who has betrayed him by using her ability to see the future and past. There is also a lot shown of how much Laila doesn’t take Vlad’s crap throughout the entire book. It features a great guest spot by Cat and Bones from the Night Huntress books, but it does kind of act as a spoiler for the rest of those books if you aren’t up to date. If anything, the story really starts to revolve around watching the bond between Vlad and Laila develop. Let’s just say the end leaves you wanting the next book to be available already because their relationship moves miles within this first installment.
The smut is pretty hot for what does happen, but it’s not as racy as it has been for me in the Night Huntress series book. This isn’t a fault, however. It’s the first book and I enjoy the “taking it slow” aspect of it.
Overall I really enjoyed reading this book and can not wait for the second one to be released. 4 out of 5 stars. Totally worth the cash!
